Testing Your Vacuum Power Booster

*VERY EASY*

You can test vacuum operated power brakes as follows:

  1. After the engine has idled, park the vehicle on level ground in a well-ventilated area with the engine OFF, the parking brake engaged, and the transmission in PARK (for automatic) or REVERSE (for manual).
  2. Eliminate any residual vacuum in the booster by pumping the brake pedal a few times.
  3. While lightly pressing your brake pedal, start the engine.
  4. The pedal should move slightly downward immediately after the engine starts. If it does not, have the power booster replaced.
